California [edit]
Western stop of I-ten at the McClure Tunnel in Santa Monica
Betwixt its due west terminus in Santa Monica, California, and the major Due east Los Angeles Interchange, I-ten is known equally the Santa Monica Superhighway. The Santa Monica Throughway is besides chosen the Rosa Parks Expressway for the segment get-go at I-405 (the San Diego Expressway), and catastrophe at I-110/SR 110 (the Harbor Freeway). The segment between the East Los Angeles Interchange and the city of San Bernardino, 63 miles (101 km) long, is called the San Bernardino State highway. Other names exist for I-10. For example, a sign about the western terminus of the highway in Santa Monica proclaims this highway the Christopher Columbus Transcontinental Highway.
The San Bernardino State highway in California virtually the interchange with the Ontario Freeway (I-15)
I-10 is known to a considerably lesser degree as the Veterans Memorial Highway, and information technology is listed every bit a Bluish Star Memorial Highway. In Palm Springs, I-10 is also named the Sonny Bono Memorial Superhighway as a tribute to the late entertainer who served both every bit the mayor of Palm Springs, and as a U.S. Congressman. Another stretch a short distance east in Indio is proclaimed the Doctor June McCarroll Memorial Freeway.
Arizona [edit]
The end of I-17 at I-10 in Phoenix
In Arizona, the highway is designated the Pearl Harbor Memorial Highway. The portion through Phoenix is named the Papago Expressway, and it is a vital piece of the metropolitan Phoenix freeway system. This designation starts at Loop 101, near 99th Avenue, and information technology continues east to the interchange southeast of downtown which is the terminus of I-17.
Near Buckeye, the superhighway has mile markers posted every 0.two miles (0.32 km) from 112.2 to 110.eight with the interstate shield and management of travel posted on the westbound lanes. On the eastbound lanes, mile markers from 110.8 to 112.2 practice not include the I‑ten shield and direction of travel.
From the southern terminus of I-17 to the southernmost junction with Loop 202, the highway is signed as the Maricopa State highway. This name holds truthful every bit well for I-17 from its southern terminus to the Durango Bend south of Buckeye Road. From Loop 202 southward to the eastern terminus of I-viii only southeast of Casa Grande, the highway is declared the Pearl Harbor Memorial Highway. The Arizona Department of Transportation also has maps that show it as the Maricopa Freeway, while the American Automobile Association and other sources show it as the Pima Expressway. The latter's name is used on a stretch of Loop 101 from Loop 202 to I-17.
Betwixt I-17 in Phoenix and the I-19 interchanges in Tucson, I-ten is included in the federally designated CANAMEX Corridor, extending from Mexico City to Edmonton, Alberta.
In Tucson, betwixt I-ten mileposts 259 and 260 are interchange ramps connecting I-10 with the northern terminus of I-19.
The highest height forth I-10 occurs just eastward of Tucson, twenty miles (32 km) w of Willcox, at the mile mark 320 exit for the Amerind Foundation and Museum. The westbound lanes of I-10 briefly cross above 5,000 feet (1,500 m) above body of water level.
New Mexico [edit]
View of Lordsburg from US 70 and the junction with I-10 in New United mexican states
In New Mexico, I-10 more than or less follows the onetime path of U.Southward. Road 80 (US fourscore) across the land, although major portions of old US fourscore were bypassed in Western New Mexico's Bootheel and in Doña Ana County. I-10 passes through 3 Southern New United mexican states municipalities of regional significance before the junction with I-25: Lordsburg, Deming, and Las Cruces. Most of I-10 in New Mexico, between Leave 24 and Exit 135, is concurrent with U.s.a. 70.
At Lordsburg is the western junction of US seventy and a concurrency; the ii highways are joined all the style to Las Cruces. Several exits between Lordsburg and Deming are either for onetime towns (including Separ, Quincy, and Gage) or lack whatever town at all.
At Deming is the western junction of US 180, which also forms a concurrency with I-10 all the style to El Paso. One mile (one.6 km) north of Deming on US 180 is New Mexico State Road 26 (NM 26) which serves as a short cutting to north I-25 and Albuquerque.
I-10/US seventy/U.s.a. 180 continue east to Las Cruces which is the southern end of I-25. US 70 leaves I-10 (prior to the junction with I-25), heading northeast to Alamogordo, passing through the north side of Las Cruces. The junction with I-25 occurs only south of the New Mexico State Academy campus, on the southern finish of Las Cruces. I-10/Usa 180 becomes concurrent with US 85 at the junction with I-25. I-x/US 85/US 180 so turns south to the Texas state line, crossing information technology at Anthony.
Texas [edit]
From the state line with New Mexico (at Anthony) to State Highway 20 (SH 20) in w El Paso, I-10 is bordered by frontage roads South Desert for lanes along I-10 Due east (really headed south) and Northward Desert for lanes along I-ten Due west (headed northward). The interstate and then has no frontage roads for nine miles (14 km) but regains them east of downtown and retains them to Clint. In this stretch, the frontage roads are Gateway E for the eastbound lanes and Gateway West for the westbound lanes. All four frontage roads are one-mode streets. Gateway Eastward and Gateway West are notable, in particular, for TxDOT's liberal usage of the Texas U-turn at almost underpasses of I-10 on this stretch.
I-10 is the western terminus for I-20, and the two highways intersect at Scroggins Draw, about 41 miles (66 km) Southwest of Pecos, at mile mark 186.
A modest portion of I-10 from Loop 1604 to Downtown San Antonio is known as the Northwest Expressway or the McDermott Freeway, while another portion from downtown to Loop 1604 East is called Due east Expressway or José López Expressway. In Downtown San Antonio, it has a concurrency with I-35, and, throughout most of the northwest side of the metropolis, it has a concurrency with United states of america 87, which begins in Condolement, before turning off and heading east out of the city. Starting in San Antonio, it follows a more direct road of US ninety, with occasional small concurrences.
In Houston, from the western suburb of Katy to downtown, I-x is normally known as the Katy State highway. This section has as many as 26 lanes (12 mainlanes, viii lanes of admission roads, and half-dozen mid-throughway HOT/HOV lanes, not counting access road turning lanes)[4] [5] and is one of the widest freeways in the world. The space for the expansion was the right-of-way of the old Missouri–Kansas–Texas Railroad. The department east of downtown Houston is officially known every bit the East Freeway, although it is widely known by locals as the Baytown East Freeway due to a marketing button by Baytown, 1 of the largest cities in the Greater Houston Area.
In Beaumont, it is known as I-ten South, south of Calder Avenue, and I-ten North, north of Calder Avenue. It is known every bit I-10 East from the I-x bend to the Neches River, which is Beaumont'southward and Jefferson County's eastern boundary line. Orange County is on the other side. Continuing into Orange Canton and passing through the metropolis of Orange at the easternmost end of Texas, and located at the base of the Sabine River Span is the last I-10 mile marker in Texas, number 880, before entering into Louisiana. Approximately 36% of I-10's unabridged route is located within Texas.
Louisiana [edit]
In Lake Charles, Louisiana, a 13-mile (21 km) loop road signed equally I-210 branches off of I-10 and goes through the southern portion of the city. In Lafayette, it serves equally the southern terminus for I-49. Before long later on, in that location is an xviii-mile (29 km) stretch of elevated highway between Lafayette and Billy Rouge known as the Atchafalaya Swamp Pike, as information technology goes over the Atchafalaya River, across the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge, and the adjacent swamps. It crosses the Mississippi River at the Horace Wilkinson Bridge in Baton Rouge. Billy Rouge eastbound is the only portion of I-10 that is essentially one lane. After crossing the Horace Wilkinson bridge, two lanes from I-110 South merge with ii lanes I-x East into iii lanes with one of the eastbound lanes quickly becoming an exit but lane. After delays, the highway is back to four lanes and the I-x/I-12 divide. I-12 links Baton Rouge to Slidell and bypasses I-x'southward southward jog through New Orleans by remaining north of Lake Pontchartrain. In New Orleans, a stretch of I-10 from the I-10/I-610 Junction about the Orleans-Jefferson parish line to the US 90/U.S. Route 90 Business (US xc Coach) Junction is known as the Pontchartrain Expressway. A dip near the I-10/I-610 Junction, to travel nether a railroad runway, is ane of the everyman points in New Orleans, and is highly susceptible to flooding. Pictures of water dozens of feet deep (several meters) during Hurricane Katrina are commonplace. Almost Slidell, the final stretch of I-x through the Mississippi state line is known as the Stephen Ambrose Memorial Highway.
I-310 and I-510 are parts of what was slated to exist I-410 and human action as a southern bypass of New Orleans. I-610 is a shortcut from the eastern to western portion of New Orleans avoiding I-10's detour into New Orleans' Central Business organization District.
Mississippi [edit]
I-ten in Mississippi runs from the Louisiana state line to the Alabama state line through Hancock, Harrison, and Jackson counties on the Gulf Coast. It passes through the northern sections of Gulfport and Biloxi while passing just north of Pascagoula and Bay St. Louis. It also passes right south of the NASA Stennis Space Heart. The highway roughly parallels Us ninety.
The law defining the road of I-10 is Mississippi Code § 65-iii-3.
Alabama [edit]
I-ten eastbound in downtown Mobile approaching the George Wallace Tunnel
I-10 crosses over the edge from Jackson County, Mississippi, and it goes through Mobile County in southwestern Alabama. In Mobile, I-10 is the southern terminus of I-65. In downtown Mobile, I-10 goes through i of the few highway tunnels in Alabama, the George Wallace Tunnel nether the Mobile River.
The speed limit of the eastbound approach is posted at 40 mph (65 km/h) because of the abrupt downward curve approaching the tunnel. The highway then crosses approximately eight miles (13 km) of the upper part of Mobile Bay on the Jubilee Parkway, a bridge that local people call the "Bayway". The highway is next to Battleship Parkway. On the other side of Mobile Bay, the highway goes through the suburban surface area of Baldwin County earlier passing through Malbis, Loxley, and and then on to the Perdido River to cross over it into Florida.
Florida [edit]
I-10 westward at the interchange for US 17 Alt south in Jacksonville
Most of I-10 in Florida travels through some of the least-populated areas in the state. Much of I-x west of I-295 in Jacksonville has but 4 lanes.[6]
In Jacksonville, equally in Arizona, I-x is designated as the Pearl Harbor Memorial Highway. Throughout much of Florida, I-10 is also State Road 8 (SR 8), though it is not signed as such. (I-110 in Pensacola is known as SR 8A.)[7]
History [edit]
| | This section needs expansion. You can aid by adding to it. (December 2015) |
While the highway has existed as far back as 1957, the last section of the unabridged road to be completed was a section of the Papago Freeway from both I-17 interchanges (including the Deck Park Tunnel) in Phoenix, which opened in 1990.
Many widening projects take taken place on the interstate in the belatedly 2000s. In Pensacola, Florida, a iii-mile (four.8 km) stretch of I-10 was widened to six lanes in 2008.[8] In Tallahassee, Florida, structure was completed in June 2009 on a project to widen a roughly eight-mile (13 km) stretch of I-10 to six lanes (eight in some places).[9] In Tucson, Arizona, all exits between Prince Road and 22nd Street reopened afterward an extensive, three-year improvement project. I-ten was widened from half dozen to eight lanes, and 7 bridges and underpasses have been built to deal with congestion.[x] I-10 from the I-eight interchange in Casa Grande to Marana was widened from 4 to six lanes from the second one-half of 2007, to its completion in 2009. Also in Arizona, from Verrado Way in Buckeye all the style to Avondale, the interstate was widened throughout the belatedly 2000s and early on 2010s, with an HOV lane added between Estrella Parkway in Goodyear and Loop 101.
Texas formerly shared the highest speed limit in the nation with Utah's test department of I-15.[xi] The speed limit along I-x from Kerr County to El Paso County was raised by the Texas Legislature to 75 mph (120 km/h) in 1999 and to 80 mph (130 km/h) in 2006. Still, the night maximum speed limit remained 65 mph (105 km/h), and the daytime truck speed limit was seventy mph (115 km/h). With 70,000 mi (110,000 km) of highway in Texas, the 432-mile (695 km) stretch of I-10, and 89 mi (143 km) of I-20, between Monahans and the I-10 interchange at the cusp of the Davis Mountains, merely a modest percentage of roads were afflicted.[12] On September 1, 2011, night-time speed limits were eliminated, and the statutory maximum speed limit in Texas was increased from 75 to 80 mph (120 to 130 km/h).
Every bit far dorsum as the 1990s, Florida and Alabama have considered a connector that would link Dothan, Alabama, with I-10. In 2008, a proposal to make this new highway a toll road and to expedite its construction to consummate information technology in five years surfaced. In 2012, federal funds previously set aside for the connector were allocated to other projects. In 2014, Florida sought bids for a feasibility study.[13] [14] [15]
Between August 27 and September x, 2015, x out of xi Phoenix freeway shootings occurred on I-x. The concluding incident, on September 10, took place on Loop 202.
In March 2019, the two members of Liverpool indie pop duo Her's died alongside their tour manager after a caput-on collision on I-10 near Salome, Arizona.[16]
